Women's History Month: Joyce Jefferson as Lucretia "Mahogany Lou" Marchbanks

Tuesday, March 10, 2020

In 1881 the New York Daily Stock Report put forth the question “Who is Aunt Lou?” when discussing mining in the Black Hills. The Black Hills Daily Times responded: “Aunt Lou is an old and highly respected colored lady who has charge of the superintendent’s establishment of the DeSmet mine as housekeeper, cook and the superintendent of all superintendents who have ever been employed at the mine. Her accomplishments as a culinary artist are beyond all praise…The superintendent may be a big man in the mine or mill, but the moment he steps foot within her realm he is but a meek and ordinary mortal.” Ms. Marchbanks story is one of many women from the Powder River Basin to be kept alive. The Rockpile Museum invites you to visit on Tuesday, March 10th at 7pm to meet and hear from Ms. Lucretia “Mahogany Lou” Marchbanks presented by professional storyteller and Living Historian, Ms. Joyce Jefferson, a South Dakota Humanities scholar. For more information call the museum at (307) 682-5723.
