Art in the Stacks
Friday, October 1, 2021
As you’re browsing the stacks for your next favorite book at CCPL or WBL, you may have noticed and wondered about the paintings and sculptures adorning your libraries. Art in the Stacks is an after-regular-library-hours event that is your opportunity to learn more about Campbell County Public Library System’s fine art collection which is sponsored by The Library Foundation Inc.
Art in the Stacks includes art tours lead by Steve Riss, former Foundation president, and Dara Corkery, current Foundation president. They have great stories to tell about the collection at large as well as insight into the techniques used to create individual pieces. The event also includes music by the Hunter family, lead by Stan and Colleen Hunter; hors d’oeuvres; a sneak peak at CCPL’s new video lab.
Riss describes the art as “an impressive collection representational of the early and late 21st century usually found only in larger cities. The majority of paintings reflect the Plein Aire style of painting. Although the collection is western-art influenced, it is also comprised of landscapes from sea to shining sea. Included is West Coast impressionist Edgar Payne’s Brittany Sails, an East Coast seascape painting by Chauncey Ryder, the Grand Tetons (Afternoon Light) painted by Wyoming’s own Conrad Schwiering, and Gerard Delano’s Canyon Pastoral representing the Southwest. Etchings by Hans Kleiber and charcoals by Hollis Williford are included in the collection and a number of bronzes also grace the spaces of your libraries.”
The Library Foundation Inc. of Campbell County Public Library System is a 501(c)(3) community-based organization which provides an average of $40,000 per year in support of Campbell County Public Library and Wright Branch Library. Foundation fundraising efforts bring public art and innovative programs and services to our libraries. In addition to Corkery, Foundation members include Cheryl Ballard, Vice-President; Deb Proctor, Treasurer; Jenny Sorenson, Secretary; and Barb McNutt.
Please join us for this event and learn about the fabulous collection of fine art housed at your library.
